When it's released it will also allow non-atari musicans to compose music for Atari using their PC (like GoatTracker allows to compose SID on PC) which is a great thing. Rasters music-tracker is a very good effort, I hope it will increase quality of the atari musics further. Atari had much better sampled sound though. We could discuss this for ages but basically it's always 4 x 8bit registers for frequencies (or combined together to make 2x16 or 1x16 and 2x8). Yeah! Encounter is quite different on Atari and more colorful, but I got used to it on C64. Honorable mention would go to the MSX computers for the great Japanese programs. If you want to hear and see what an Atari can do, check this: Īnd don't forget the Atari 8-bit machines can have their wave tables rewritten, therefore permitting SID-like sound without cheating (check the Atari version of DELTA): True, the Atari 8-bit computers had fewer games but many classics were written on these machines in the first place: FORT APOCALYPSE, ENCOUNTER!, BRUCE LEE, ARCHON, RESCUE ON FRACTALUS!, BALLBLAZER, SPY VS. For flight sims and vector graphics (or perhaps isometric) games, Z80-based computers are the most suitable.įor shmups and action games which require a fast and smooth scroll, lots of sprites gliding softly on screen, and some cool music and sound effects, the C64 is your choice.įor the sheer amount of games and the graphics and sound capabilities. In short, I'd say it depends on the game genre. C64: Oh, don't you know this little beast? nice bright colours, blocky graphics, jerky scroll and some "metallic" sound effects and music. Fighter Bomber was especially good on it. As a Z80-based computer, the CPC is rather good at running vector gfx games. CPC: I used to play this a lot at some friend place. ![]() ![]() But never played any games on it, so I can't really tell. VIC20: I had one of these until my dad took it to his medical lab. Anyway I really love this little bugger, as it was the machine I first wanted my parents to buy me. ![]() Speccy: Crisp clear hi-res gfx, but not very colourful.
